Perchance to Dream
The campaign world is similar in size to Earth. Much of it is unexplored by those residing in the Holy Lands (Himmeldon, Nattvar, and Helsoder). Vitruvius Corbusier is said to hail from lands to the north of Himmeldon. The people of the Holy Lands simply refer to these lands as the Northern Grounds. To be continued…
Humans- The most populous race in the world, and most common race in Iberia, humans make up most of Halek Slagsord’s (Giant Marshall of Iberia) defense. In addition, the majority of the residents, nearby villagers, and visiting merchants are humans. Humans of Nattvar and surrounding nations are very dark skinned, near pitch black. Both men and women of the race shave their heads when they reach adulthood. It is said that in shaving their heads they are removing all barrier from Leucid (God of Sleep) entering their dreams and offering life guidance. In old age, when they believe they have grown wise, they allow their hair to grow once again. These dark-skinned humans are referred to as the Mastarras in Nattvar. The same race is referred to as the Lamiskarras in the other lands. Humans from the North wear full heads of hair, and are fair skinned and pale-eyed.
Dragonborn- Not native to Nattvar, but when the Giant regime took control of Nattvar, they welcomed many clans of Dragonborn from the South for mercenary purposes. As such, Dragonborn have been fairly common in the more military based areas of the nation for over a century. The civil war has seen an influx of Dragonborn with allegiances to both sides of the conflict. Dragonborn have shown in Iberia in greater numbers in recent months – many show no allegiance to either Giant or Vitruvius, but claim a higher calling in protecting the High Altar found there.
Dwarves- Until the last year, the Dwarves have been an enslaved race. Even in their recent freedom, the Dwarves are having a rough time of it, as much of the populous still see them as a lesser race. Both the men and women are bearded. A fact many humans find repulsive. Despite their oppressed history, dwarves tend to be generally proud of their race, and have become rabidly supportive of Vitruvius, who led them out of slavery. Dwarves have lived and worked their entire existence in mountain caverns and mines, and often still find larger cities foreign to them. Dwarves hold a special affinity for Tieflings, who often inhabit nearby caves. Dwarves are occasionally seen in Iberia since the fall of the Regime, but the fact that the town is still technically under Giant rule makes their appearance somewhat less than safe.
Eladrin- A mysterious, elf-like race never seen in Nattvar. The Eladrin hail from the Feywild to the North. In the forested mountains of the North it is said that the highest peaks touch the Feywild allowing passage between the realms. Elder Eladrin are respected for their wisdom and many of the North risk the dangerous trek to the Feywild for their counsel. Only the youngest and weakest of Eladrin are permitted to descend from the Feywild to the world. The Eladrin are extremely fair skinned (almost luminous)...green, gray, or gold eyed, and favor wearing their hair extremely long regardless of gender. They have a civil, if strained relationship with their Elven brothers.
Elves- Inhabit forest, and as such are not native to the near desert lands of Nattvar. However, the northern borders of Himmeldon was once home to an Elvish forest. The forest was raised over a century ago, but Elves are still scattered about these lands, often living in larger cities. Elves are also believed to be populous in the more forested lands to the North. And Dragonborns of the South tell of a race of dark skinned elves which live on barrier islands. Elves are generally tan skinned, though much lighter in hue than the Mastarras, and dark haired and pale eyed. Despite many historical allegiances with humans, the Elves generally distrust them and consider them “corruptible.” Humans on the other hand tend to be fascinated (and strongly attracted to) Elves. Iberia’s status as a High Altar stronghold means that it sees slightly more Elves than other towns.
Half-Elves- Slightly more common than Elves, simply because Humans are more welcoming of HalfElves than Elves are, who think of these ‘cross-breeds’ as carriers of tainted blood. Half-Elves tend to live in large urban areas where they find their odd appearance more accepted. Half-Elves are generally of the same build, stature, and features of Elves. But Half-Elves found in the Holy Lands are of the same black skin as Humans (Mastarras). Most, but not all, also follow the human custom of shaving their heads in adulthood as well.
Hobbits- (PHB halfling game rules) Are second only to humans in numbers. They are very common in Nattvar. Humans and Hobbits get along famously. Both treating the other race almost parent-like. But Hobbits tend to be more respected amongst the other races. Whether it is that they have less of a reputation for corruption, or just that the humans have generally had more power…it is hard to say. Hobbits of Nattvar are black skinned like humans, though they wear full heads of hair. Hobbits do not grow facial hair…favor going barefooted…and, of course, the tops of their feet are hairy. Some hobbits live within the walls of cities, though these tend to be looked at by their race as the more “adventurous sort”. Most hobbits favor holes built into the hills found at the foot of mountain ranges found throughout the land. In particular, Hobbits seen in Iberia generally come from the foothills at the base of the nearby Crystolis Mountains.
Tieflings- their devilish appearance make Tieflings society’s outcast, perhaps even moreso than Dwarves. They are native to Nattvar. Indeed they are said to be found in all reaches of the world. Though in small numbers. Tieflings prefer the seedier sections of very large cities or remote enclaves in mountain caverns. They are often assumed to being allies of Abyssal beings and practicers of the faith of Tressa, Goddess of Nightmares. However, the race does have those that defend it…many of those who have fought beside Tieflings have a high opinion of both their abilities and honor. Tieflings tend to side with the Vitruvian rebellion in the wars, as they sympathize with the Dwarves.
